The failed assassination attempt was masterminded by fervent Catholic, Robert Catesby. P. L. Catesby, who had been due to go looking with the King, suspected that Tresham was liable for the letter, and with Thomas Wintour confronted the recently recruited conspirator. In his confession, Tresham claimed that he had asked Catesby if the plot would rattling their souls, to which Catesby had replied it would not, and that the plight of England's Catholics required that it be done. By the time the plotters reconvened at the start of the previous style new year on Lady Day, 25 March, three more had been admitted to their ranks; Robert Wintour, John Grant, and Christopher Wright. Northumberland, though not a Catholic himself, planned to build a strong relationship with James I so as to higher the prospects of English Catholics, and to scale back the family shame caused by his separation from his wife Martha Wright, a favorite of Elizabeth I. King James's daughter Elizabeth, whom the conspirators planned to put in on the throne as a Catholic queen.
